SAVE THE EVERGLADES


Again, the builders and the Miami-Dade County Commissioners
intended to move the limits of the Urban Development Boundary.
Nothing seems to stop them, they do not care about the thousands
of empty buildings waiting for customers in the middle economic
crisis. Do not take into account that the budget is not enough to build
roads, aqueducts and other infrastructure for building existing and
future constructions . Much less interested in traffic worse on areas
close to development. The Priority is to cross the border and expand
the city, this dangerous action could injury the ecosystem of the
Everglades National Park and eventually could reduce agriculture land.
While the threat continues, environmentalists will stand firm
maintaining the UDB.

MANTENGAN LA LINEA
SALVEMOS LOS EVERGLADES

Nuevamente los constructores y los comisionados del Condado de
Miami-Dade atentan contra los Limites de Desarrollo Urbano (UDB,por
sus siglas en inglés). Nada parece detenerlos, poco les importa los miles
de inmuebles vacíos esperando por clientes en medio de la crisis
económica. No toman en cuenta que el presupuesto no alcanza para
construir carreteras, acueductos y otras infraestructuras para las edifi-
caciones existentes y las futuras. Mucho menos les interesa el
congestionamiento en las zonas cercanas al desarrollo. La prioridad
es cruzar el borde protector y extender la ciudad, peligrosa acción que
debilitaría el ecosistema del Parque Nacional los Everglades y acabaría
con las pocas tierras de uso agrícola existentes.
Mientras la amenaza continue, los ambientalistas seguiremos firmes en
la tarea de mantener la linea de demarcación urbana.

LEGACY OF MARJORY

One of Marjory Stoneman Douglas major concerns was
environmental education. It was important for her to
promote the love of nature and to train new generations
to become faithful guardians of nature.
Thus as loyal protector of the environment, in 1969 her
work began in a hot dog stand in Crandon Park and years
later, in 1991, her dream comes true with the construction and
operation of the Center for Nature in Key Biscayne.
This non profit corporation is now headed by the
environmentalist Theodore Long, who, accompanied
by an extraordinary team, promotes environmental
education and a greater citizen participation in
protecting the natural environment.

EL LEGADO DE MARJORY


Entre los múltiples pensamientos ambientalistas que
ocuparon a Marjory Stoneman Douglas estuvo el educa-
tivo. Para ella fue importante inculcar el amor a la
naturaleza a las nuevas generaciones y formarlas de
esa manera como fieles guardianes del ambiente .
En 1969 esta tarea comienza en una caseta de perros
calientes en el Parque Crandon y años más tarde, en1991,
su sueño se hace realidad con la construcción y
funcionamiento del Centro para la Naturaleza en Key
Biscayne.
Esta corporación sin fines de lucro está dirigido
actualmente por la emprendedora ambientalista
Theodora Long quien, acompañada por un equipo
de primera ,trabaja por la education ambiental y el
fomento de una mayor participación ciudadana en la
protección del medio ambiente natural.

WEAPONS IN THE PARKS


Respect the supreme right of American citizens
to possession of weapons legally, but not share the size of them in
national parks. The crime rate in these natural sanctuaries
is so low that might be categorized in either non-existent. This, in my view, is no reason for entering weapons to these environments.
Have enough work to keep the dedicated rangers law
order and also to monitor the trigger happy now.

ARMAS EN LOS PARQUES

Respeto el supremo derecho que tienen los ciudadanos norteamericanos
a la posesión de armas legales, más no comparto el porte de ellas en los
parques nacionales . El índice de criminalidad en estos santuarios naturales
es tan bajo que bien podríamos catalogarlo de inexistente. Esto, a mi modo de ver, no justifica el entrar armado a esos ambientes.
Bastante trabajo tienen los abnegados guardaparques manteniendo la ley
y el orden para también vigilar ahora a los gatillos alegres.

LA EXóTICA INVASORA

La muerte de una niña estrangulada por una serpiente sirvió
para alertar a la comunidad sobre el peligro de tener en los hogares
especies exóticas invasoras como mascotas.
Desde hace tiempo, la pitón birmana al escapar o ser liberada
por sus propietarios, ha venido tomando los humedales de los Everglades
como su nuevo habitat. Recordemos el mortal encuentro de una serpiente
de 13 pies de largo y un caimán de 6 pies en octubre de 2005
en el Parque Nacional de los Everglades, un ejemplo de amenaza
latente para las especies nativas.
La cacería de este reptil, autorizada por el Congreso de los Estados Unidos,
ha comenzado con resultados positivos, más pienso que se debería
legislar para frenar el tráfico, tenencia y abandono de estas especies.

THE INVASIVE EXOTIC

The death of a girl strangled by a snake served
to alert the community about the danger of
alien species in homes as pets.
For some time, the Burmese python to escape or be released
by its owners, has been taking the wetlands of the Everglades as its new habitat. Remember the fatal encounter of a snake
13 feet long and a 6-foot alligator in October 2005
in the Everglades National Park, an example of threat
latency for native species.
Hunting of this reptile, authorized by the Congress of the United States,
has started successfully, the more I think it should be
legislation to curb trafficking, possession and abandonment of these species.

HIGH TENSION IN THE EVERGLADES



In the late'60s, a project of the Dade and Monroe counties to build a jetport in the Everglades, was stopped by conservationists from around the country.
The voice of Marjory Stoneman Douglas led the protest that prevented the destruction of hundreds of square miles of the river of grass.
Today the utility FPL, seeks to cross and divide the Everglades
installing power lines on land purchased by this company 40 years ago.
The spirit of Marjory enlighten the consciences of friends and enemies of the river, and an environmental sense prevails in this new confrontation between the insatiable urban development and the fragility of an ecosystem threatened constantly.

ALTA TENSIóN EN LOS EVERGLADES

A finales de los años 60, un proyecto de los condados Dade y Monroe para construir un aeropuerto en los Everglades ,fue detenido por los conservacionistas de todo el pais .
La voz de Marjory Stoneman Douglas encabezó la protesta que evitó la destrucción de cientos de millas cuadradas del río de hierba.
Hoy la empresa eléctrica FPL ,pretende atravesar y dividir los Everglades
instalando lineas de alto voltaje sobre tierras adquiridas por esta hace 40 años atrás.
Que el espiritu de Marjory ilumine la conciencia de los amigos y enemigos del río, y prevalezca el sentido ambientalista en este nuevo enfrentamiento entre el insaciable desarrollo urbano y la fragilidad de un ecosistema constantemente amenazado .
